Abstract

Periclase of high electrical resistance is made by fusing magnesia in an electric furnace with the addition of up to 10 per cent of carbon, preferably 3 to 5 per cent of petroleum coke. The product is broken up, ground and graded, and the sized material is then calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere at about 1300 DEG C. Amorphous magnesia containing 90 per cent or more of MgO, obtained by calcining Indian magnesite is preferred but other forms, e.g. sea-water magnesia, may be used, in the form of fines or pellets. This is mixed with coke of 10 mesh size and fused in an arc furnace. The product is free from alkali and alkaline earth salts, and is readily broken up. The graded material after calcining may be used as an insulator for electric heating elements.ALSO:Periclase of high electrical resistance is made by fusing magnesia in an electric furnace with the addition of up to 10 per cent by weight of carbon, preferably 3 to 5 per cent of petroleum coke.
