Abstract
Acetylene is produced by the incomplete oxidation of methane in a process wherein the methane and oxygen are mixed at a temperature below 500 DEG C. and preferably at room temperature and heating the mixture to above 600 DEG C. in a metallic preheater, the inner walls of which at least where heated to above 550 DEG C. are smooth, a small pressure drop of less than 0.1 atmosphere being maintained over the preheater, and maintaining a small linear gas velocity of up to 10 metres per second through the preheater. The preheater may be of steel containing 10-20 per cent by weight of chromium and preferably have an internal surface area of more than 0.6 square metre per litre of heater space, filling bodies being added if necessary. Also the temperature difference between the wall of the heater and the gas at least at temperatures above 550 DEG C. is kept below 50 DEG C. Iron oxide should be excluded by means of a filter. After heating the reaction mixture, preferably to 700-750 DEG C., the mixture, to which may be added nitrogen or steam, is passed to a conventional reaction chamber.
