Abstract

17,014. Bynoe, F. O., and Edwards, H. July 22. Tempering.-Low-pressure superheated steam of high temperature is used for heating steel to the required temperature for tempering. The steam may be passed into a chamber A containing the article C to be heated, and exhausted therefrom through a pipe F, the bottom H of the chamber A being opened automatically or otherwise when the required temperature has been reached; or the steam may impinge directly on the article in the atmosphere, or may be passed through a jacket surrounding a chamber containing the article, or through a flat chamber on the heated upper surface of which the articles are placed. The temperature may be regulated by means of a thermostat or a hand-cock. The steam may be passed through a number of chambers in series or in parallel.
