Abstract
In the process of the parent Specification, wherein an alkylated anthraquinone is hydrogenated in solution in the presence of metallic palladium on activated alumina catalyst, and the alkylated anthrahydroquinone produced is oxidized to produce hydrogen peroxide and regenerate the alkylated anthraquinone, which is recycled to the hydrogenation, the water content of the mixture in the hydrogenator is maintained within the range corresponding with relative humidities in the gas phase of 40-98 per cent. The anthraquinones may be 2-methyl-, 2-ethyl-, 2-n-propyl-, 2-iso-propyl-, 2-sec.-butyl-, 2-t-butyl-, 2-sec-amyl-, or 1,3-, 2,3-, 1,4-, or 2,7-dimethylanthraquinones and at least part of the anthraquinone may be the alkylated tetrahydroanthraquinone. As described, 2-t-butyl anthraquinone in solution in methylnaphthalene and diisobutyl carbinol mixture is hydrogenated in the presence of the catalyst prepared as in the parent Specification, dried to a water content not exceeding that corresponding to a relative humidity of 60 per cent. The relative humidity of the incoming gas is adjusted by contact with pure water. Nitrogen is passed through first to establish water equilibrium and hydrogen is then substituted therefor. The hydrogenation may be effected at 0.4-3 atms. and 20-50 DEG C. Specification 686,572 is referred to.
