Abstract

Resins resistant to the action of uranium hexafluoride are prepared by the action of gaseous elementary fluorine, mixed with at least nine times its volume of a gas inert to fluorine, on benzene, toluene, hexane, kerosene or a lubricating oil, or a partial fluorination or chlorination product thereof, the treatment being continued until the fluorination product contains at least 65 per cent by weight of combined fluorine. In examples: (1) fluorine diluted with nitrogen is passed through a roll of copper screening moistened with light lubricating oil until an oil containing 40 per cent by weight of combined fluorine is produced, this is dissolved off the screen with ether, the ether evaporated and fluorine diluted with nitrogen passed through the oil while stirring and gradually heating to 100 DEG C.; a chlorinated light lubricating oil may be similarly treated; (2) fluorine mixed with nitrogen is passed into an iron pipe in which it mixes and reacts with benzene vapour carried by a stream of nitrogen, the resulting resinous deposit being washed from the walls of the pipe with ether. The Specification as open to public inspection under Sect. 91 of the Patents and Designs Acts, 1907-1946, comprises also the fluorination of other hydrocarbons and their partial fluorination or chlorination products, e.g. propane, butane and tetramethylmethane. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
