792,848. Extruding particles of explosive material. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Sept. 28,1955 [Oct. 4, 1954], No. 27621/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXI] In making globular smokeless powder grains (see Group XXI), a lacquer of nitrocellulose in a solvent is supplied, at 60‹C., by pump to grainer 4, where it enters, at 3, housing 17 behind orifice plate 15. The lacquer is extruded through orifices 16 and cut off by 4 radial blades 18 mounted on motordriven shaft 20 ; the speed of blade rotation and of lacquer extrusion being co-ordinated to provide bodies of length equal to diameter. Suspension liquor, at 60‹C., is simultaneously, continuously, supplied through pipe 21 to immediately suspend the lacquer bodies ; the rotation of the blades being sufficient to maintain suspension. The grainer is a closed vessel of say 1 gal. capacity, and the suspension of lacquer bodies passed out through tangential port 8 to a still, where the suspended bodies are rounded and hardened.
