746,705. Spherical grain propellants. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Jan. 24, 1952. No. 8376/54. Divided out of 746,661,. Class 9(2) Globular grains of propellent powder having a controlled grain size are made by extruding smokeless propellent base lacquer, e.g. nitrocellulose in a solvent such as ethyl acetate, through an orifice severing successive uniformly sized sections from the extruded lacquer, suspending the sections in a medium. which is a non-solvent for the lacquer or its components until they approach spherical shape, and then hardening the shaped sections while.- suspension is maintained. The orifice may be located within the non-solvent medium, e.g. water, and the sections, which may be cylinders whose length is the same as their diameter may be severed at the orifice. In the example, 3:1 ethyl acetate/nitrocellulose lacquer containing diphenylamine is extruded through an 0.056 inches dia. orifice, and sliced in a moderately agitated water bath, at 68-70‹C.. containing animal glue and saturated with ethyl acetate. After rounding, the bath is heated to 99‹C., until solvent is eliminated to harden the grains, which are 0.035-0.045 inches dia.
