Catch bars 2, 3, and/or point bars, are operated by cam and counter-cam 17, 18, and follower arms 13, 14, through links which pivotally connect the bars and the follower arms to a common member 10 situated adjacent the shaft 23 about which the cams rotate and so pivoted from above as to be capable of swinging as a whole under its pivot. The member 10 is ring-like, enclosing the camshaft 23, and its pivot 24 is above that shaft. The follower arms are rigidly interconnected at and rock about an axis 28 and, through an extension 27 of one of them and links 12, 11, are rigidly connected to the member 10 at its pivot. The member 10 is, in turn, connected to the bars through links 8, 9 and arms 5, 6, at the ends of the bars and rockable about pivot 7. The links 8, 9 have arcuate lower ends, to clear the cam-shaft and are pivoted to the member 10 at 25 and 26. When one of the points 25, 26 is moving through a substantially horizontal part of its arcuate path and its catch bar is thus substantially stationary, the other point is moving along a substantially vertical part of its path and thereby moving its catch bar towards or away from the stationary catch bar. When the catch bars are relatively long, their movement is assisted by bell-cranks 39, 40, situated at points along their lengths and pivoted at the ends of arms 45, 46, themselves pivoted about fixed points 43, 44. Links 37, 38 connect the bell-cranks to rockable shafts 31, 32, in turn connected through links 35, 33, 29 and 36, 34, 30 to the arms 5, 6. Specification 717,538 is referred to.
