Abstract

792,729. Electric digital-data-storage apparatus. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 22, 1956 [June 22, 1955], No. 18026/55. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A data storage system comprising a rotating magnetic storage drum and a reading and/or recording head unit has an adjustment device to determine the relative position of the head unit and the drum and means therein to compensate for thermal expansion and so maintain the reading and/or recording heads at a constant distance from the drum surface. The arrangement is applicable to the head unit described in Specification 790,230, [Group XXXVIII]. A magretic drum 10, Fig. 1, having a vertical axis O, has a reading and/or recording head unit 11 of which N represents a nose, in association therewith. A member 12 of part-cylindrical form rotatable about a vertical axis R carries a part-cylindrical mounting 13 for the head unit 11, the mounting 13 being rotatable about a vertical axis Q in the member 12. Coarse adjustment of the head unit 11 is obtained by rotation of the member 12 about the axis R and, by means of the vernier screw arrangement 14, of the mounting 13 about the axis Q. A fine adjustment of the position of the nose N may then be made by rotation of the head unit 11 about its vertical axis P. To compensate for the reduction in the distance between the nose N and the drum surface due to temperature increase, a spacer 20, Fig. 2, of a material having a high coefficient of expansion is inserted between the threaded sleeve 21 and the casing 22 of the screw arrangement 14. The dimensions are so arranged that when the temperature rises the spacer 20 expands to such an extent as to rotate the mounting 13 about the axis Q by an amount sufficient to maintain the distance between the nose N and the drum surface effectively constant. A modification for a drum having a horizontal axis is described (Fig. 3, not shown).
