Abstract
<PICT:0792560/III/1> In the recovery of sulphur, produced in the Claus process, by washing the reaction product gas in a tower with liquid sulphur, the sulphur is recirculated from the bottom of the tower to the top thereof, and is simultaneously cooled, by means of an injector device operated by a gas and/or liquid vaporizable at the temperature of the liquid sulphur, said gas or liquid being at a temperature lower than that of the liquid sulphur. The sulphur may be cooled from about 150 DEG to 125 DEG C. Super-heated water at a temperature of 110 DEG C. together with steam may be employed. Hydrogen sulphide may be burned with air in a steam boiler and the resulting gas, at a temperature of about 320 DEG C., passed through a catalyst chamber to produce a sulphur-containing gas at a temperature of about 450 DEG C. As shown, this gas passes through inlet 1 into a scrubbing tower 2 fed with liquid sulphur through inlet 3, and the residual gas passes through outlet 6, after which it can be used for drying parts of apparatus, &c. The resulting sulphur passes through outlet 4 to a sump 5, where it is cooled and drawn up tube 11 as a mixture with steam by the injection of a mixture of superheated water and steam through pipe 9, whereafter it is separated by means of baffles 12 and returned to tower 2 via inlet 3. The remaining steam passes through outlet 13, after which it can be used for distilling aqueous ammonia or hydrogen sulphide.
