Abstract

1,218,493. Electrochemical analysis. SIEMENS A.G. July 3, 1969 [July 3, 1968; Feb. 5, 1969], No.33672/69. Heading G1N. In measuring the concentration of SO 3 in flue gases, the flue gases are introduced at 1 into the upper end region of a vertical separating column 3 having a condenser 7 at is upper end, superheated steam is introduced at 6 into the lower region of the column 3 and the resulting condensate of sulphuric acid passes down the separating column, releasing SO 2 and CO 2 , to a thermostatically controlled conductivity measuring cell 9 and a condensate quantity measuring means 13. The gas flow from the top of the condenser 7 is regulated to a constant value and the supply of super-heated steam is regulated in dependence on the amount of condensate detected at 13. Part of the condensate may be recycled to the steam generator, after distillation at 19. An axial heater (50) may be provided in the condenser 7 and an air cooler 8 may be provided between the column 3 and the conductivity cell 9. A combustion process (e.g. in a boiler) may be controlled in dependence on the SO 3 content of its flue gases as measured in the apparatus.
