792,517. Production of reinforced paper &c. CARLSON, A. E. Nov. 24,1955, No. 33727/55, Class 96. In the production of reinforced paper &c., bundles of filaments which may be of rayon, nylon or glass and may be untwisted, or thin yarns, or threads are supplied with adhesive, fed to paper 10 and spread or flattened as by a blade or applicator, e.g. so that they form a thin ribbon. Paper strips 70 from spools &c. 60 to which adhesive &c. may be applied at spray booths 100, or which may be coated with heat-activated adhesive or pressure-sensitive adhesive may be fed to the paper 10 so that they are interspersed between the spread bundles of filaments. The spools &c. 60 are supported from a gear-ring 40 rotated by an electric motor 50 and reduction gearing 52, 54, and the strips 70 are fed through guides 72 mounted on a double.chain driven at the same r.p.m. as the gear-ring but their guide-track 93 is elliptical so that the strips are drawn from the spools &c. 60 at a substantially constant rate. If a solvent, e.g. water or isopropanol is applied at 100, it is stored in reservoirs 120, fed through conduits 130 and forced into spray form by compressors 122 on the gear-ring 40. The reinforced paper may be laminated to a cover-sheet. The mandrel 30 over which the webs of paper 10 are drawn may be heated by electrical elements 135. In a modification, the mandrel 30 may be approximately hexagonal to accommodate six webs of paper, instead of two as illustrated. Longitudinal reinforcement may be provided as well as transverse, or the reinforcement may be diagonal.
