Abstract

Aqueous sugar solutions containing a solute, e.g. potassium aconitate, of ionization constant at least 5 X 10-2 are fed to displace water from a water-immersed bed of a highly ionized ion-exchange resin of gel water content 50-90 per cent by volume, and then water is fed to the bed in order to obtain a fraction containing a major portion of the highly ionized solute and then a fraction containing a major portion of the sugar. The volume of sugar solution is preferably not greater than the volume of water absorbed within the resin particles, and the volume of water fed is preferably at least that of the absorbed water. Solution temperatures between 25 DEG and 80 DEG C. are suitable. The resins used are sufficiently highly ionized that a 10 g. portion of a cation-exchange resin added to 100 ml. of a 0.1 n. sodium chloride solution reduces the pH to less than 3 and an anion exchange resin under the same conditions produces a pH greater than 11. Examples of the resins are the sodium or potassium salt of a nuclear sulphonated copolymer of 93.5 per cent styrene, 2.5 per cent ethylvinylbenzene and 4 per cent divinylbenzene and a quaternary amino-methyl nuclear substituted copolymer from styrene, ethylvinylbenzene and divinylbenzene in similar proportions. Specifications 577,707, [Group IV], 654,706, and 679,850, [both in Group IV(a)], are referred to.
