Abstract

1295376 Separating radioisotopes UNION CARBIDE CORP 23 Nov 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 55554/70 Heading G6R Yttrium-90 is separated from strontium-90 by contacting an aqueous solution containing Sr-90 and sodium oxalate, ammonium oxalate, or ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid with a cation exchange resin, so as to adsorb the Sr-90 on the resin and then eluting Y-90 as required from a layer not exceeding 1 cm. in thickness using a similar aqueous solution without the Sr-90. The resin may be polystyrene cross-linked with divinylbenzene and containing sulphonate groups, and may be supported on cellulose, nylon, or polyurethane foam, for example by pulverization and incorporation in cellulose discs. The solution of Y-90 may be used in the examination of the vascular system of plants.
