Abstract

792,201. Fluid-actuated valves. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. May 23, 1956 [July 18, 1955], No. 20784/55. Class 135. An automatic change-over valve for gas cylinders &c. comprises a piston 13 of ferromagnetic material movable in a barrel 1 between two extreme positions on either side of a gasdelivery port 12 and adapted in either position to close a gas inlet 10 or 11 against the pressure by magnetic attraction between the piston and one or other of end caps 2, 3, until the pressure differential between the gas inlets overcomes the magnetic attraction, whereupon the piston moves to close the other gas inlet. The barrel 1 is of polystyrene or like non-metallic material and is closed at its ends by the caps 2, 3 which are of soft iron or other magnetic material held in sealing engagement with the barrel by flanged nuts 8, 9. The piston may be a permanent magnet and the end caps may be unmagnetized or vice versa. Alternatively the piston may be formed as the core of an electromagnet and the end caps may be unmagnetized or vice versa. The piston may operate a visual warning device. The end caps may be joined by a metal stirrup adapted to be fixed to an anµsthetic machine.
