Abstract

Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys are treated to obtain a fine grained crystal structure on casting by addition of P and/or P compounds into the melt in the form of a fine powder most of the particles of which are below 60 microns in size. The P and/or P compound may be added with a carrier such as a halogen salt, preferably KCl or Ca Cl2 the mixed substances being ground together before use. Other known grain refiners may also be added such as Ti, Ti salts, B or Zr compounds. A suitable mixture containing red phosphorus 5-40 per cent, KCl 50-90 per cent, K2TiF6 2-20 per cent is added in amount of 0.5-1.0 per cent of the weight of the melt which is held at a temperature between 730 DEG C. and 800 DEG C. The additives may be introduced by means of a plunger, being packed in bags or tubes of Al foil. The effect of the addition is enhanced by subsequent treatment of the melt with a halogen e.g. Cl gas.
