Abstract

An antibacterial composition, suitable for oral administration, in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion comprises 3,4-dimethyl-5-sulphanilamido-isoxazole and/or 3,4-dimethyl-5-(N1-acetycl - sulphanilamido) - isoxazole, water, a pharmaceutically acceptable edible oil, e.g. peanut oil or cottonseed oil, and an emulsifier. The emulsifiers disclosed are lecithin, cellulose methyl ether, higher fatty acid esters of polyhydroxy alcohols or their anhydrides or polyoxyalkyl derivatives thereof, gelatine, gum tragacanth, gum acacia, saponine, egg albumin and agar. The compositions may also contain preservatives and antioxidants such as methyl paraben, propyl paraben, butylated hydroxyanisole or sodium benzoate, sweeteners and flavouring agents. In the preparation of the compositions the oil may be emulsified in water and the sulphonamide suspended in the emulsion, or the sulphonamide suspended in the oil and emulsifying the suspension in water.
