Abstract

791,640. Cooling furnace walls. PENBERTHY, H. L. March 1, 1956 [March 9, 1955], No. 6468/56. Class 51 (2). Erosion of a glass furnace wall 20 near the level 24 of the molten bath is alleviated by an elongated boiler 26 supported near to the wall by a mounting 28 and provided with a plurality of pipes 30 terminating in flattened nozzles 32 directing steam against the wall at or near the said level 24. Heat radiation from the wall may be controlled by a series of movable aluminium screens 38. The steam generated may be used to cool other walls, and the boiler may be movably mounted to vary its distance from the wall.
