[Class 51 (ii)] In a furnace for melting granular material such as glass-making material the melting tank 17 has an extension for receiving the granular material above which extension is arranged a vertically adjustable wall independent of the roof and side walls of the furnace and comprising a vertical portion 28 and a horizontally extending portion 30 below which the materials are fed on to the molten glass 24 and fritted or sintered by heat from the wall 30 before being moved into the heating chamber. The adjustable wall comprises refractory blocks 29 supported by hangers 47 and brackets 41 mounted on horizontal beams 36 secured to vertical beams, refractory blocks 31, 32, 33 supported by hangers and brackets 48 secured to horizontal beams 36, 37 and comer blocks 34. The blocks are of the kind described in Specifications 278,070, [Class 51 (ii)], and 379,110. Plates 56, 57 are secured to the beams 36, 37 to enclose a space at the back of the wall for the circulation of air supplied from a wind box 58 and nozzles 59. A vertically adjustable water cooled plate 85 is supported at the outer end of the horizontal portion 30 of the wall: Each end of the wall is provided with two pairs of guide rollers which bear against the sides of vertical plates attached to buckstays 64. The wall is suspended by screwed rods 74 and links 79 from fixed overhead beams and is vertically adjusted by nuts 75. Horizontal adjustment of the wall is effected by screws 83 mounted on the wall frame and adapted to exert pressure on the links 79. U.S.A. Specifications 2,240,190 and 2,284,420 also are referred to.
