Abstract

791,598. Electric contact brushes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 28, 1956 [April 5, 1955], No. 9958/55. Class 140. An electric contact-making brush comprises a porous body of suitable brush material impregnated with an epoxy resin in admixture with a hardening agent, the mixture being polymerized, after impregnation into a substantially insoluble and infusible form. Specified brush material comprises carbon or graphite as its principle constituent; and a metallic constituent may be added. The epoxy resin may be a complex polyether derivative of either a polyhydric alcohol comprising epoxy groups or a polyhydric phenol containing epoxy groups. Suitable hardening agents are polycarboxylic acids, acid anhydrides and organic bases. A modifying resin such as a urea formaldehyde, amine formaldehyde, polyamide or phenol formaldehyde resin may be reacted with the epoxy resin. Impregnation may be effected by progressive dipping in an epoxy resin (in the liquid or molten state) to which a hardening agent has been added, or by a vacuum or vacuum and pressure technique. Polymerization of the resin within the impregnated brush may be accelerated by heat. In an example, a graphite brush is immersed in a liquid epoxy resin and hardener mixture comprising a condensation product of epichlorhydrin and diphenylolpropane mixed with diethylene triamine and impregnated by, means of vacuum and pressure. The impregnated brush is then baked.
