Abstract

1380720 Articles made from aromatic polymers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 59593/71 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A base for use in an electrical apparatus assembly comprises a moulding of a thermoplastic aromatic polymer formed externally so as to be accommodated in an electric socket and having an open end to contact the neck of an envelope to contain the electrical apparatus. The aromatic polymer contains repeating units of the formula -Ar-X- where Ar is an arylene radical and X is the group CO or SO 2 . The apparatus may be an electric incandescent lamp, a fluorescent lamp, a thermionic valve or a cathode-ray tube while the base may be fashioned as a bayonet or Edison screw fitting. In an embodiment a bayonet type lamp cap 1 made from a polysulphone is slid over the neck 7 of a lamp bulb 8 and adhered thereto by a molten aromatic polymer 11 which subsequently sets. The conductors 14 of the bulb are fed through apertures 4 in the cap 1 as the cap is positioned and solder is used to secure the conductors to the cap the excess of the conductors being cut off. In other embodiments, the cap may abut the envelope or be moulded to fit the contours of the neck (Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, not shown). The thermoplastic aromatic polymer may be a phenylene ether or thioether polysulphone or polyketone. The cap may be fixed to the neck by an epoxy resin or an impact adhesive or an aromatic polymer containing hydroxyl end groups. Alternatively the material of the cap may be melted in situ and thus secured to the neck.
