Abstract

791,292. Gas turbine plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. April 17, 1956 [April 19, 1955], No. 11330/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a rotating member supported by axiallyspaced ball or roller bearings, the bearings are lubricated by means comprising a tubular member supported coaxially within the rotating member to rotate therewith, the ends of the tubular member being blanked off to form a reservoir which is supplied through a lubricating nipple with a grease-type lubricant, passages leading outwardly from the reservoir to the bearings so that on rotation the lubricant flows along the passages under the action of centrifugal force to lubricate the bearings. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a gas turbine engine has a compressor rotor 10 supported by two bearings 12, 13 and a turbine rotor 11 supported by a bearing 14, the rotors being connected by a driving shaft 15. A tubular member 18 is arranged coaxially within the driving shaft and is provided with a high-pressure grease nipple 19, which may be supplied with grease indirectly through a more robust nipple 19a. The tubular member 18 is supported by rings 20, 21 and a double sleeve 38, 35 all of which are provided with passages so that grease can flow by centrifugal action from openings in the member 18 to the bearings. Lubricant seals provided on both sides of the bearings allow escape of air during packing of the bearings with grease. The tubular member 18 may be provided with flanges 39 to conserve a supply of lubricant for each bearing. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the tubular member 48 is divided into three chambers, one for each bearing, by a shaft-like member 49, each chamber having an outlet port 52 and being provided with its own lubricant nipple at one end of the tube. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, a tube 59 which functions as a main chamber for grease is spaced from a tube 58 by axially-extending ribs to form subsidiary chambers 62, one for each bearing. Stops 65 are provided in the subsidiary chambers and are located in conjunction with ports 66 connecting the main and subsidiary chambers to ensure that the flow paths from the main chamber to the bearings have equal resistances, to provide equal lubrication to the bearings.
