Abstract
791,269. Bruising &c. fodder. BONDA'S VEEVOEDERBUREAU N.V. July 13. 1956 [July 26, 1955 ; Dec. 3, 1955], No. 21713/56. Class 59 In a method for pretreating green fodder which is to be ensiled and which is mechanically bruised and disintegrated to such a degree that a large number of cells are opened, the moisture content of the material is reduced to between 72 per cent and 76 per cent by weight by extracting juice and/or by adding a dry substance during the pretreatment of the material. The dry substance may be added during or after the bruising &c. operation. The juice may be extracted during a squeezing operation which may be simultaneous with the bruising &c. operation and the juice thus extracted may either be mixed with a dry substance and ensiled separately or mixed with the bruised, disintegrated and squeezed material with the addition of dry substance in sufficient quantity to reduce the moisture content of the material to be ensiled to the desired value. The dry substance may be any material which is suitable for use as a cattle food. If desired, a small quantity of a substance containing a soluble and therefore rapidly fermentable, carbohydrates, e.g. molasses, may be added to the material to be ensiled, and such substance may be added before or during as well as after the mechanical treatment of the fodder. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a casing 1 provided with an inlet opening 2, a conveying screw 4, and one or two grids 5, 6 followed by a tapering discharge nozzle 3. The pitch of the screw may decrease towards the discharge end of the casing. Rotatable knives 7 are provided in front of, between or behind the grid or grids. The bars of the grids are preferably radial and sharp at the sides facing the inlet opening 2. The grid 5 is preferably located at, or at a distance not exceeding a few centimetres beyond, the inlet opening 2. The discharge area may be varied by means of an adjustable member 8. The casing 1 may be perforated to drain away the juice.
