Classes 5(i), 5(ii) and 58 [Also in Group II] Apparatus for thrashing grain or for subjecting grass, plants and the like to a crushing, beating or pulping action prior to storage in silos to provide. a reserve of cattle food comprises one or more rotary beaters 4 and a rotary fan 2, 3 carried by a common shaft 6 and accommodated within a cylindrical housing 1 having an inlet 8 and an outlet 10 for the treated material, the outlet being directly exposed to the fan and beaters. The effective area of the inlet may be adjusted by fitting interchangeable screens 9. The beaters may act in conjunction with a part-cylindrical partition 11 provided with an opening 12 opposite the outlet 10. The opening may be closed by a removable damper 13. The partition, which may have its inner surface serrated or formed with teeth or ribs, may consist of upper and lower parts hinged together at 14, the lower part being adjustable about the hinge. The beaters comprise substantially oblong plates with V-shaped recesses to provide pairs of teeth. The housing is provided with a plate 18 to guide the treated material towards the outlet. The latter may have extending therefrom an upstanding assembly of tubular elements forming a discharge funnel terminating at its upper end in a laterally bent part. The shaft 6 carrying the fan and beaters is driven from a tractor or like apparatus by means of a belt 16 and a pulley 17. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the outer ends of the beaters co-operate with ratchet teeth disposed substantially in a semicircle and secured to the inner face of the lower part of the housing around the inlet, and means are described for mounting the housing on a tractor.
