Abstract

791,192. Extruding; making cupped bodies. COMPTOIR INDUSTRIEL D'ETIRAGE ET PROFILAGE DE METAUX. April 12, 1956 [May 9, 1955], No. 11221/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making a hollow metal body such as a shell, preferably having cylindrical and conical portions, comprises heating a metal billet to extrusion temperature, coating at least the external surface and lower part of the billet with a first vitreous lubricant having a low viscosity at the surface temperature of the billet, placing the billet 3, Fig. 4 (not shown), in a die 1, slightly compressing the billet in the die, Fig. 5 (not shown), placing in the centre of the upper part of the billet a small quantity of a second vitreous lubricant 6, Fig. 6, having a higher viscosity than the first lubricant, rapidly piercing the billet with a punch 2, Fig. 8, whose lower face has a recess 2e adapted to retain a certain quantity of the second vitreous lubricant, the metal of the billet being thereby forced down to the bottom of the die and also extruded upwardly along the wall of the die and punch, and ejecting the hollow body by means of an ejector 7. The billet is first heated to a temperature of about 1200‹ C. in. a coal furnace, gas or oil furnace, electric furnace or an induction furnace, the heating being effected without any special precautions to avoid oxidation. After withdrawal from the furnace the surface oxide on the billet may be removed by jets of water under pressure. The first viscous lubricant may be glass powder or enamel having a viscosity between 50 and 500 poises and is applied by depositing the powder on an asbestos sheet over which the billet rolls on its discharge from the furnace. The second viscous lubricant preferably comprises powder glass 6, Fig. 6, having a viscosity between 500 and 1000 poises and is applied through a funnel 5, Fig. 6. The extruded body may be subsequently machined. A specific example is given for the pressing of a 120 mm. calibre shell giving the dimensions of the punch and die, the dimensions of the billet, and the composition of the vitreous lubricants used. Specifications 716,933 and 731,321 are referred to.
