Abstract

791,174. Welding by fusion. BIRMING- HAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. Nov. 12, 1956 [Dec. 7, 1955], No. 35067/55. Class 83 (4). In arc or gas welding, a backing for the joint to be welded is formed by a bridge of magnetic powder held in position across the joint by a magnetic field applied between the parts to be joined. A backing 4, Fig. 1, of magnetic powder is held in place by a permanent magnet 1 bridging the joint between tubes 2, 3. Longitudinal welds in tubes and butt welds in unprepared thin sheets or bevelled thick sheets are made similarly. As shown in Fig. 7, four members forming a box-like structure are welded using a magnet 23 and a powder backing 24, both ends of one pair of opposite members 19, 21 being bevelled. The parts are demagnetized by the heat of welding or by subsequent heating. The process is suitable for inclined welding. The powder consists of a magnetic metal or alloy, e.g. iron, or a refractory material, e.g. magnetic iron oxide, and may be mixed with non-magnetic metal, flux or refractory material. Part of the powder may be incorporated in the weld. The magnetic field may be set up by electromagnets.
