Abstract

The surface of a shaped article which has been formed by pressure moulding and consisting principally or wholly of polymerized methyl methacrylate is polished by bringing it into contact with a liquid or gaseous fluid, e.g. water, which does not dissolve or react chemically with the resin during the polishing step and which is at a temperature at or above the softening point of the resin, contact being maintained for a time which is sufficiently long to effect a polishing of the surface but so short that no part of the article becomes so heated as to lose its shape. In an example a refractor panel made from polymethyl methacrylate is immersed in boiling water for 15 seconds and then plunged into cold water.
