Abstract
765,767. Cracking glass. COMPAGNIES REUNIES DES GLACES ET VERRES SPECIAUX DU NORD DE LA FRANCE. Jan. 18, 1955 [Jan. 18, 1954], No. 1539/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 56 A plane or bent glass sheet is cracked throughout its thickness around a closed contour by initiating a crack in the skin of one face by a sudden heating of short duration localized along the closed contour, rapid cooling of that face and then the advancement of the crack by establishing a temperature difference between the two faces, the hotter being the one where the crank was initiated. The shape of the crack may be defined by masks leaving only a narrow portion of the sheet exposed; this is exposed to radiation from an electric heating element. The exposed surface may then be cooled by wiping with a damp cloth. The sheet may then be reversed and the surface having the incipient crack just immersed in a heated liquid bath. Alternatively the sheet need not be reversed but but may be placed on a support with the cracked face uppermost and whole of this face then heated by radiation from an electric heater. The crack may be filled by a thermoplastic resin having the same index of refraction as the glass whereby the crack is substantially invisible.
