Abstract

<PICT:0592583/IV/1> Plasticised synthetic rubber-like materials such as plasticised polyvinyl chloride, which are normally liable to shrink and crack when moulded and amalgamated by heat in strips round an elongated body, are subjected to a heat treatment while suspended substantially vertically under a relatively slight tension in order to cause them to undergo a shrinkage which will enable moulding to be effected without cracking. The heating may be effected in a convection oven, a liquid bath or by irradiation. In an example, plasticised polyvinyl chloride strip 5 passes through a glass-walled chamber 1 heated by infra-red lamps 6, the chamber being kept as air-tight as possible. Depending loop 5a is associated with detector means 14 and 15 which automatically vary the speed of rollers 12 when the loop rises above or descends below predetermined limits.
