Abstract

791,105. Preserving cellulosic materials; treatment of paper pulp &c. NATIONAL CYLINDER GAS CO. May 8, 1956, No. 14218/56. Classes 96 and 140. Cellulosic materials are impregnated with cupric formate and then subjected to a temperature of above 100‹ C. but not so high as to have a deleterious effect on the material, so as to effect chemical combination between at least part of the copper and the cellulose. The cupric formate may be applied in solution, preferably in aqueous solution, or it may be formed in situ by successive treatments with a copper salt and formic acid. Examples are given of treating cotton duck, various types of timber, sisal twine, wood chips for paper-making and pulp for paper-making, the chemical combination with the fibres in the last instance being brought about by heating the finished paper. The impregnation of wood may be carried out in a vacuum, and pressure subsequently applied. The heating step may be carried out under normal, reduced or increased pressure and in the presence of steam, air or other gases. Protection is conferred against Chaetomium globosum, Aspergillus niger, soil organisms and, in the case of timber, against termites.
