Abstract
Pyrethrum flower products which retain a high content of pyrethrins on storage are obtained by separating the achenes or achenes-plus-florets from the remainder of the flowers, and treating the achenes or achenes-plus-florets to reduce the rate of diminution of the pyrethrins therein. The treatments are exemplified by spraying with a mineral oil or vegetable oil, e.g. sesame oil, with a 0.1-5 per cent aqueous solution of hydroquinone, or with a solution of piperonyl butoxide in water or oil, subjection to a 0.1 to 5 per cent concentration of sulphur dioxide gas, replacement of the air in the interstices of the achenes or achenes-plus-florets with carbon dioxide or nitrogen, mixing with 0.1 to 5 per cent of granular, gas-absorbent charcoal, and incorporating additionally, if desired, a fungicide such as a phenol or a mercury compound; the product may also be baled at 500 pounds per square inch pressure or briquetted at 5,000 pounds per square inch pressure, and bales may be wrapped in impervious material, e.g. paper or hessian may be adhered to the bales by a layer of bitumen.
