Abstract
Vegetable materials containing carotene, e.g. subdivided carrots, are mixed with a small proportion of calcium hydroxide, preferably 2 per cent, or a calcium compound, e.g. oxide, carbide or nitride, which by reaction with the water present in the vegetable material forms the hydroxide, and the water content is removed as liquid, e.g. by pressing. The carotene concentrate so obtained may be stabilized by addition of phosphoric acid to pH5, drying and then treating with formic acid to pH 3.5; the product is stated to contain substantially all the carotene in the original stereochemical form as all-trans b -carotene. The carotene concentrate may be extracted using gasoline, or vegetable oils, to yield a product rich in alltrans b -carotene and free from cellulose.ALSO:Vegetable materials containing carotene, e.g. carrots, lucerne, sweet potatoes, are mixed with a small proportion, e.g. 2 per cent., of calcium hydroxide or a calcium compound, such as the oxide, carbide or nitride, which by reaction with the water in the vegetable material forms the hydroxide, and the water content of the mixture so reduced by removal of water as liquid, e.g. by pressure. The product may be used as animal food. The carotene concentrate so obtained may be acidified to pH5 by phosphoric acid, dried and then acidified to pH3,5 with formic acid; this product also may be used as animal food. Carotene may be extracted as a solution from the concentrate, before or after such acidification, by gasoline or vegetable oils to obtain a product for use in margarine manufacture.
