Abstract
Straw and other fibrous vegetable materials are steamed to produce pulp for paper-making, by placing the material in bulk in a closed chamber, reducing the air pressure, and then applying high - pressure steam. The high-pressure steam may be exhausted and low-pressure steam then be applied. The straw is preferably compressed before treatment to a density of twenty to thirty pounds per cubic foot. The treated material may be passed to a grinder and thence to a drying conveyer and to apparatus for forming it into cubes. In some cases, the steamed material is washed and strained to separate the cellulose fibre for use in paper-making, while the residual liquid is concentrated by evaporation to constitute a foodstuff for animals.ALSO:Straw and other fibrous vegetable materials are steamed to produce animal food and, in some cases, pulp for paper-making &c., by placing the material in bulk in a closed chamber, reducing the air pressure, and then applying high-pressure steam.
