Abstract
Fibrous ligno-cellulosic material is subjected to mechanical compression and the compressed material is allowed to expand in a liquid containing chemicals required for a subsequent treatment so that the liquid is sucked into the pores of the material; the impregnated material is then subjected to a chemical treatment for facilitating the separation of the fibres in an atmosphere of steam at a temperature above <PICT:0741980/IV(a)/1> 100 DEG C., preferably between 150 DEG and 220 DEG C., and for a period of at least 5 minutes, in the presence of chemicals having a neutralizing effect on organic acids formed in the treatment; the material is then subjected to mechanical defibration so as to obtain cellulose pulp. As shown, wood chips fall from hopper 210 into a conveyer shoot 211 which is vibrated so as to cause the chips to move along to the feed opening of a compressor. This device comprises a tapering casing 220 containing a rotatable screw 222 and merging on the discharge side of the screw into a tube 221 of gradually increasing diameter. This tube is joined to tube 223 which is provided with a hinged flap 224. A duct 225, enclosing tube 223, opens into a long inclined conveyer casing 20 which contains a solution of the chemicals with which the chips are to be treated. The compressed chip material on entering the duct 225 absorbs the solution and becomes thoroughly impregnated. The conveyer 22 feeds the chip material upwardly above the level 16 of the liquid to the discharge shoot 25. The material may be impregnated with a solution of sodium hydroxide, sodium hydrosulphite or a mixture of these chemicals. The impregnated chip material from the shoot 25 is then passed into a chamber (not shown) in which it is heated in an atmosphere of high-pressure steam for a period of at least 5 minutes, e.g. 10-20 minutes. This treatment chamber may be provided with a feed screw which has to work against a considerable counter-pressure so that part of the chemical-containing liquid absorbed is then squeezed out of the chip material. The chemically-treated material is then subjected to mechanical defibration. The device for compressing the chip material may be in the form of a reciprocating plunger instead of a rotary screw conveyer.
