Abstract
293,779. Obry, V. P. H. I. W. d'. April 11, 1927. Pulp, preparation of. - Grasses, reeds, and similar soft herbaceous plants, particularly the straw or stalks of cereals, are subjected to a steaming process at a pressure of about five to six atmospheres and for a duration of about two to four hours without the addition of water or chemicals. The material may, if necessary, be moistened prior to the steaming, but during the steaming liquid is not brought into contact with the material, any condensate being drained off. The condensate may be used for moistening the material prior to the steaming. After steaming the liquid constituents are extracted from the solid material which may be disintegrated, by pressure or other mechanical means. The solid material may be used in the manufacture of paper, cardboard or the like. The raw material may be cut into chaff prior to steaming, or it may be steamed in bales that, are subsequently disintegrated by grinding or kneading or squeezing.
