Abstract
791,093. Purifying coke obtained by coking hydrocarbon oils. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 15, 1955 [Nov. 30, 1954], No. 32650/55. Classes 50 and 55 (1). Coke obtained from coking heavy hydrocarbon oils by spraying them into a bed of fluidized coke particles, is partially desulphurized by contact with steam at a temperature between 1200-1700‹ F. and then with hydrogen at a temperature between 1200- 1700‹ F. whereby the coke is activated and the sulphur content is reduced to a 4 per cent maximum. The steam treatment lasts 2-10 hours, preferably 3-8 hours, and the hydrogen treatment 0.5-6 hours, preferably 1-4 hours, with flow rates of steam and hydrogen of 0.1- 1 wt./wt./hr. and 100-400 vol./vol./hr. respectively. The treatments may be carried out with the coke particles in a fixed, moving or fluidized bed. In an example the sulphur content of petroleum coke was reduced from 7.6 per cent to 3.5 per cent in treatment lasting 12 hours. The fluidized coking of the heavy oils is carried out at 850-1200‹ F., preferably 900-1000‹ F. and a pressure of 1-10 atmospheres, preferably 1.5-2 atmospheres.
