Abstract

Water is removed from a water-containing liquid hydrocarbon composition by maintaining the composition in contact with urea at an elevated temperature, until evolution of ammonia and carbon dioxide, formed from the reaction of the urea and water, ceases. The elevated temperature may be 150-212 DEG F. From 1.2-2 mols. of urea may be used for each mol. of water in the composition. Elevated or reduced pressures may be used to treat hydrocarbons not liquid under atmospheric conditions. Unreacted urea may be removed from the treated compositions by filtration. The process may be used to dehydrate transformer oils, gasoline, kerosene, Diesel fuels, fuel oils, lubricating oils and flushing oils, and to break water-oil emulsions. In the examples, the treatment of white oil containing water, and crude oil emulsions containing salt water or water and caustic alkali is described.
