Abstract
In a selenium rectifier having a counter electrode comprising cadmium, an intermediate layer which facilitates the production of cadmium selenide, is applied to the selenium, the layer having a thickness of (3 to 5) 10-4 cm and consisting of selenium and a substance from Group III(b), the quantity of the substance being (0.05 to 5) 10-5 gm/sq. cm. Thallium or a thallium compound is given as an example, and may be applied with selenium to the selenium layer, by a vapour coating process. The intermediate layer may consist of fine strata of selenium and thallium applied successively, and a halogen may also be added to this layer. The initial selenium layer may also consist of strata having different content of impurity such as halogen, the content decreasing from the base electrode towards the counter electrode.
