Abstract

791,014. Cutting by spark discharge. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. Sept. 4, 1956 [Sept. 9, 1955; March 2, 1956], Nos. 25812/55 and 6546/56. Class 83 (4). A method of forming by spark machining a deep hole, comprises using an electrode having a cross-section smaller than is ordinarily used for a hole of the cross-section required, and periodically encouraging side sparking to increase the section to that required. Side sparking may be encouraged by interrupting the lengthwise feed of the electrode and/or increasing the operating voltage by 10-20 per cent. The operating voltage is preferably rectified A.C. The invention is preferably used for forming holes of 0.02-0.03 inch diameter and each feeding stage is limited to 1 or 1¢ inches in length before the cross-section is increased by side sparking. The interruption of feed and/or the increase of voltage may be effected automatically at the required intervals. Reference is made to machining heat and corrosionresistant alloys used for gas turbine blades.
