Abstract
790,573. Making composite rollers. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Oct. 23, 1956 [March 8, 1956], No. 32319/56. Class 83 (2). In a method of making a conductor roll for applying current to strip metal, a steel barrel 8, Fig. 1, is attached by steel end supports 4 to a shaft 2 and the assembly is provided with a thick coating 18 of welded copper followed by an electroplating on the barrel 8 with copper or a copper-containing alloy and a final chromium plating 22. The end supports 4 are attached by keys 6 to the shaft 2 and additional support is provided by welded plates 10. The -welded copper coating 18 is machined to size and the copper plating 20 is roughened by shot-blasting so that the chromium plating also has a rough surface. Bores 16 in the end support 4 permit the escape of gases during manufacture and are subsequently sealed.
