<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Im
EMI5.1
Ra = J/y/dx im fly
EMI5.2
moins égale a 5 mm.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Conductive cylinder for continuous electrolysis cell and cell equipped with at least one such cylinder'1.
The present invention relates to a conductive cylinder for a continuous electrolysis cell comprising an electrolysis chamber containing a metal strip to be treated, such as a steel sheet intended to be covered with a metallic protective film, from an input conducting cylinder located on one side of the aforementioned chamber and from an output conducting cylinder 20 situated on the opposite side with respect to this chamber, these two conducting cylinders being connected to a supply cathodic current so that the metal strip acts as a cathode, at least one anode being provided in the electrolysis chamber at a certain distance from the metal strip.
11 is known to make use, in such electrolysis cells, in particular for the covering of steel sheets, of a film of chromium and chromium oxide, of conductive cylinders, the layer of material of which is intended to come in contact with this sheet, is made of steel and stainless steel with surface chrome plating. It has, however, been found that, using
EMI1.1
such cylinders especially at the outlet of the electrolysis chamber, electric arcing occurs between the fleece and the surface of the cylinder which comes into contact with the rod, as soon as the cathodic supply current towards this cylinder reaches a certain intensity Thus, both these sheets and the surface of the cylinder itself deteriorate.
One of the essential aims of the present invention is to provide a conductive cylinder which makes it possible entirely to avoid this formation of electric arcs, and this for very high current densities.
To this end, according to the invention, at least the layer of material of this cylinder, intended to come into contact with the metal strip and to be connected to the cathode current supply,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
has an average electrical conductivity of at least 10% A.I.C. at 20 ° C, this layer being covered on the outside with a protective coating containing essentially tungsten or a tungsten-molybdenum alloy.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the above-mentioned coating has a roughness of between 50 and 250 CLA, preferably of the order of 120 to
150 CLA.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the aforementioned layer of material essentially consists of copper or a copper alloy containing at least 70% copper, such as a Cu-Fe-AI alloy.
The invention also relates to a continuous electrolysis cell equipped with at least one such conductive cylinder at the outlet from the electrolysis chamber.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description given below, by way of nonlimiting examples, of some particular embodiments of the conductive cylinder according to the invention applied in a continuous electrolysis cell and determined , with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure I is a schematic side view of a determined continuous cell using the conductive cylinder according to the invention.
Figure 2 is, on a relatively large scale, a cross section of a detail of the conductive cylinder according to the invention.
Figure 3 is a graph for defining roughness.
Figure 4 is a schematic representation of a longitudinal section of a conductive cylinder according to a first embodiment of the invention.
Figure 5 is a schematic representation of a longitudinal section of a conductive cylinder according to a second embodiment of the invention.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In these different figures, the same reference numerals designate identical or analogous elements.
FIG. 1 schematically represents a particular continuous electrolysis cell in which the conductive cylinder according to the invention can be advantageously applied.
11 is an electrolysis cell for chromium plating of steel strips 9. This cell essentially comprises an inlet section i, a chroming section 2 and an outlet section 3.
The inlet section 1 consists of a soaking tank 4 containing an electrolyte 5, a deflection roller 6 immersed in the electrolyte 5, a conductive cylinder 7 for cathode current inlet internally cooled by a circulation of water , known per se and not shown, and a support roller 8 which applies the strip 9 to the conductive cylinder.
The chrome-plating section 2 is made up of two
EMI3.1
rectangular blocks 10 and 11 superimposed, the dimensions of which are directed towards one another are hollowed out so as to delimit an electrolysis chamber 12 through which the steel strip 9 can move, as indicated by the arrow 13.
Each of the two blocks 10 and 11 is equipped with two anodes 14, a series of electrolyte injectors 15 and a supply line 16 of electrolyte, located on either side of the strip of steel 9.
The outlet section 3 essentially consists of two deflection rollers 17 and 18, mounted above an electrolyte recovery tank 19 and a conductive cylinder for the outlet 20 of the cathode current against which the strip 9 is applied. by two support rollers 21 and 22.
Thus, the steel strip 9, resting on these two conductive cylinders 7 and 20, acts as a cathode.
As shown diagrammatically in broken lines in FIG. I, in order to ensure a maximum current intensity at the anodes 14 and at the conductive cylinders 7 and 20 and thus therefore allow a speed of travel of the strip 9 through the electrolysis chamber 12 sufficient which is compatible with the intended depot, the current supply
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
takes place from two separate current sources 23 and 24. The current source 23 supplies the conductive cylinder 7 and the first two anodes 14, while the source 24 supplies the output conductive cylinder 20 and the last two anodes 14. Thus, it is perfectly possible to control, in a substantially autonomous manner, the current applied to the conductive inlet 7 and outlet 20 cylinders.
It has been noted that the fact that the steel strip 9, which comes into contact with the outlet conductive cylinder 20, is covered with a film of chromium and chromium oxide, has the consequence that, if precautions particular steps are not taken, as soon as the density of the cathode current at the output conducting cylinder 20 exceeds a certain level, arcing occurs between the surface of the cylinder and the steel strip 9. This can create a partial fusion local surface of the cylinder and the strip, or even a perforation of the latter.
According to the invention, it has been observed that these arcing blows can be avoided, even at very high electric current densities, greater than 20,000 A., by using an output conductive cylinder 20 of which at least the layer of material intended to come
EMI4.1
in contact with the metal strip 9 and to be connected to the cathode current supply has an average electrical conductivity of at least 10% and, preferably, at least 13% I. A. C. S.
In addition, in the event that this material does not have sufficient chemical resistance to the electrolyte, in particular to chromic acid, a protective coating is advantageously provided on this layer of material, also having a relatively high electrical conductivity. In this regard, according to the invention, it has been found that very satisfactory results have been obtained with a coating which consists essentially of tungsten or of a tungsten-molybdenum alloy. This coating is preferably applied by plasma.
Furthermore, to further reduce the risk of arcing and especially to avoid damaging the surface of the conductive cylinder in the event that, as a result of a local and momentary accidental increase in the density of the cathode current for example,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
an arc blow would still occur, the aforementioned coating advantageously has a roughness of between 50 and 250 CLA, preferably between 120 and 150 CLA.
CLA stands for "Central Line Average" and is a measure of the average roughness of a surface.
More particularly, the average roughness Ra is the arithmetic mean Ja of all the deviations of the roughness profile R of a surface with respect to a mean line. This was illustrated by the graph in Figure 3 and can be represented by the following mathematical formula:
Im
EMI5.1
Ra = J / y / dx im fly
Note also that 1 m is equal to 40 CLA.
The aforementioned protective coating preferably has a thickness of between 0.1 and 0.35 mm, while the thickness of the aforementioned layer of material on which this coating is applied essentially depends on the conductivity of the latter and on the intensity cathodic current. It is especially necessary that the heating of this layer of material following the passage of the current does not exceed a determined limit. Generally, this thickness is at
EMI5.2
less than 5 mm.
Furthermore, in certain cases, in order to obtain good adhesion of the coating to this layer of material, it can be applied to an electrolytic nickel deposit.
Finally, this coating can advantageously be impregnated with an anti-corrosion film of a resin, such as a phenolic resin, or of silicone with a thickness which is preferably between 0.01 and 0.05 mm.
Among the materials which have a conductivity greater than 10% I.A.C.S., it has been found that copper or a copper alloy comprising at least 70% copper, such as a Cu-AI-Fe alloy is entirely satisfactory. A copper alloy containing
EMI5.3
10 to 11, 2% aluminum, 3 to 4, 25% iron and at most 0, 50% other substances, the balance being copper, has good mechanical strength and conductivity of the order of 13% IACS
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Figure 2 shows schematically, on a relatively large scale, a cross section of the surface of a conductive cylinder intended to come into contact with the metal strip.
This cut successively shows a layer
EMI6.1
of material 25. such as copper, the outer surface of which exhibits the roughness defined above. On this rough surface is formed the deposit of electrolytic nickel 26 making it possible to ensure good adhesion of the coating of tungsten or of a tungsten-molybdenum alloy 27. This coating is then covered with an abovementioned anti-corrosion film 28.
As shown in FIG. 1, given the relatively reduced thickness of the electrolytic nickel deposit, the protective coating and the anti-corrosion film, the external surface of the latter has
EMI6.2
substantially the same roughness as that of the surface of the material layer. it should, however, be noted that FIG. 2 is only a schematic representation in which the different relative thicknesses have not necessarily been respected.
Figures 4 to 6 relate to three practical embodiments of conductive cylinders which meet the general characteristics described above.
In each of these embodiments, the same cylinder 7 or 20 forms a whole with its rotation shaft 29, which rotates about an axis 30 and is, like this shaft, completely full.
In the cylinder according to FIG. 1, the layer of material 25 is formed by the entire body of the cylinder and is entirely made of a Cu-Al-Fe alloy in the ratios defined above. The cathode current is supplied by means of bay 31 cooperating with the two free ends of the shaft 29.
The coating 27, which is either tungsten or a tungsten-molybdenum alloy, is applied directly by plasma spraying on the cylindrical surface of the body of the conductive cylinder and has a thickness of about 0.3 mm. A film of silicone or of a phenolic resin 28, preventing corrosion by the electrolyte caused by the steel strip 9, covers the coating 27. This
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
film does not obstruct the flow of current due to its reduced thickness. The part of the shaft 29 between the cylinder and the brushes 31 as well as the sides of the latter are optionally protected by a coating of chromium with a thickness of the order of 0.03 to O, Olj. mm, not shown in Figure 4.
EMI7.1
The conductive cylinder according to FIG. 5 differs from that of FIG. 4 by the fact that the body 25 ′ of the cylinder and of the shaft is made of steel. The layer of material conducting the cathode current 25 is formed by a copper jacket applied both to the body of the cylinder and to the wall of the shaft 29. The thickness of the copper jacket is of the order of 9 mm. on the cylindrical surface of the cylinder and on the order of 20 to 25 mm on the shaft.
An intermediate layer of stainless steel 32 with a thickness of the order of 10 mm is provided between the copper jacket 25 and the body 25 ′ of the cylinder. To ensure the adhesion of the tungsten or tungsten-molybdenum coating 27, it may advantageously be useful to provide between the copper jacket and this coating a deposit of electrolytic nickel, not shown.
EMI7.2
in Figure 5. By the fact that the bay 31 cooperate with the copper jacket applied to the shaft 29, the cathode current therefore passes directly through this jacket to the metal strip 9 in contact with the cylindrical surface of the cylinder.
In the conductive cylinder according to FIG. 6, the layer of material 25 is formed by the entire body of the cylinder itself and of the shaft 29 and is made of copper. To ensure the rigidity of the cylinder and the shaft, these are reinforced by a steel jacket. The part 33 of the jacket extending around the cylindrical copper surface of the cylinder is preferably made of stainless steel with a thickness of the order of 20 mm, while the part 34 of the jacket extending on the side of the cylinder and on part of the shaft is preferably made of carbon steel with a thickness which can
EMI7.3
be 25 mm or more.
It is important to note that, for the cathode current to be transmitted from the brushes directly to the body of the copper cylinder, the free ends 29 ′ of the shaft 29, with which the brushes 31 cooperate, are entirely devoid of
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of the steel shirt.
The problem of arcing strikes above all at the output conductive cylinder 20, so that, if necessary, use may be made of a conventional input conductive cylinder 7, that is to say of steel with surface chrome plating. With regard to the output conductive cylinder 20, it is important that the contact surface between the metal strip and the cylinder is as large as possible. This can be obtained by choosing the diameter, which is, for the examples shown in FIGS. 4 to 6, of the order of 320 mm, and by choosing the embracing angle, which, in the cell shown at Figure 1 is 180.
Below is a concrete example of application
EMI8.1
of the aforementioned cell for the formation of an electrolytic deposit of chromium and chromium oxide on a steel strip.
The product standards are as follows: Chromium: minimum average level: 50 mg / m2 / surface
