Abstract

Motor gasoline is obtained by catalytically hydrogenating the polymer produced by the thermal stabilization of steam cracked gasoline at elevated temperature and pressure, and fractionating the product to yield a gasoline fraction. In a preferred embodiment (Example (1)) a steam cracked gasoline was subjected to a polymerization treatment at a pressure of 375 p.s.i.g. at 200 DEG C. and a residence time of 8 hours, the resulting polymer, which amounted to about 16 per cent by weight was hydrogenated over a catalyst consisting of the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum on alumina at a pressure of 1000 p.s.i.g., a temperature of 780 DEG F., a space velocity of liquid polymer of 1.0 v/v/hour and a gas recycle rate of 4000 SCF/B. The product of the hydrogenation process may be further fractionated to yield a higher boiling fraction rich in aromatics.
