Abstract

Steam cracker gasoline is stabilized by hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst comprising the oxides of cobalt and molbydenum supported on alumina under conditions such that 100-250 S.C.F. of hydrogen are absorbed per barrel of gasoline. The catalyst may contain 5-25% of molybdenum oxide and 1,5-5% of cobalt oxide and suitable conditions are 325-600 DEG F., a hydrogen partial pressure of 15-250 p.s.i.g., a space velocity of 1-4 v/v/hr. and a hydrogen addition rate of 200-3000 S.C.F. 1 barrel. The hydrogen may be a tail gas from a reforming process or from the steam cracking. The feed may be distilled before hydrogenation to remove 2-8% as bottoms and 2-5% of the product may also be removed as bottoms by distillation. The octane number normally does not drop by more than 5.
