Abstract

790,414. Sliding latches. DEXTER INDUSTRIES, Inc. March 26, 1956 [March 25, 1955], No. 9304/56. Class 44 A deadlocking mechanism for a sliding latch comprises an auxiliary bolt 25 slidably mounted relative to a principal bolt 24, an abutment plate 31 having an aperture 32 therein, a retracting link 33 projecting through the aperture and operatively connected to retracting means for the bolt 24 and at its outer end having a lost-motion connection with the bolt 25, the link 33 having a lateral extension at its outer end, a dogging member 43 pivotally mounted on the principal bolt 24 and disposed adjacent the retracting link 33, the dogging member 43 having a surface 44 which is presented to the plate 31 adjacent the aperture 32 therein upon pivoted movement of the dogging member, means on the lateral extension of the link 33 and on the dogging member providing interengaging surfaces whereby inward movement of the link relative to the bolt 24 frees the dogging member for free passage through the aperture 32, the dogging member having a lateral extension 47, actuating means 50 on the bolt 25, having a portion disposed inwardly opposite the extension 47, means biasing the dogging member surface 44 into engagement with the plate 31 and biasing means urging the auxiliary and principal bolts outwardly of the latch housing. As shown, slight inward pressure applied to the bolt 24 in the direction of arrow 49, Fig. 8, rocks the dogging member 43 to engage the surface 44 with the plate 31 and to move the link 33 towards the bolt by the engagement of an extension 48 on the dogging member with an abutment 42 on the link, thus providing further inward movement of the bolt 24 by external force applied in the direction of the arrow 49. As soon as the bolt is operated normally the link 33 is tensioned and induces clockwise rotation of the dogging member which is thereby freed from the face of the plate 31. The actuating means 50 in the form of an attached to the bolt 25 holds the dogging member in the freed position when both bolts are in the fully extended or " door open" condition. -In a modification, Fig. 12 (not shown), the abutment 42 is flat and is engaged by an angled portion formed on extension 48 of the dogging member.
