Abstract

Nitrosamines are prepared by reacting a secondary amine with nitric oxide under superatmospheric pressure. The process may be carried out with or without an organic solvent and preferably at a minimum pressure of between 20 and 100 p.s.i. The nitrosamines may be derived from cyclic secondary amines or from secondary amines containing heterocyclic radicals or alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals optionally containing ether linkages, chlorocarbon groups or fluorocarbon groups. Specified secondary amines are dimethylamine, diethylamine, dipropylamine, dibutylamine, methylethylamine, methylisopropylamine, ethyl - tert. - butylamine, methyl - n - hexylamine, dioctylamine, ethyldecylamine, 2-methoxy - 1 - N - methylaminoethane; N - methyl-, N - propyl - and N - heptyl - cyclohexylamine; dicyclohexylamine, N - methyl - abietylamine, N-methyl-dehydro-abietylamine, N-methylhydroabietylamine; N-methyl-, N-ethyl- and N - tert. - butyl - aniline; N - methyl - paratoluidine, N - methyl - 1 - naphthylamine, diphenylamine; N-methyl- and N-phenylbenzylamine; N - methyl - phenethylamine, N - methyl - furfurylamine, N - methyl - 2 - furanamine, piperidine, pyrrole, pyrroline, pyrrolidine, indole, carbazole, oxazine, morpholine, 2 - N - methylaminopyridine, N : N1 - dimethyl - ethylenediamine, N : N1 - dimethylortho - phenylenediamine, N : N1 - diethylpara-phenylenediamine and piperazine. The examples describe the preparation of N-nitroso-N - methylaniline, N - nitrosodiphenylamine, N - nitrosopiperidine, N - nitrosodimethylamine and N-nitrosodiethylamine.
