Abstract

The invention comprises piperazine derivatives of the general formula :- <FORM:0846795/IV(b)/1> (in which R and R1 are hydrogen or hydroxyl, each R1 is hydrogen or methyl and R11 is a 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy) ethyl radical) and salts thereof with mineral and organic acids, together with a process for their preparation by reacting an a -chloro-3-R-4-R1-acetophenone with a 1-R11 piperazine. Specified 4-(2-hydroxyethyl) piperazines are 1-phenacyl-, 1-(4-hydroxyphenacyl), 1-(4-hydroxyphenacyl-2, 5-dimethyl-, 1-(3, 4-dihydroxyphenacyl), and 1-(3, 4-dihydroxyphenacyl)- 2, 5-dimethyl-, and specified 4-[2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl] piparezines are 1-phenacyl-, 1- (4-hydroxyphenacyl)- and 1-3, 4-dihydroxyphenacyl)-. 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)- 2, 5-dimethylpiperazine is prepared from aqueous 2, 5-dimethylpiperazine and ethylene oxide ; 1-[2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-ethyl]-piperazine is obtained from piperazine and 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy) ethanol in toluene.
