Abstract

789,587. Gasefying powdered fuel. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. July 12, 1956 [July 13, 1955], No. 21545/56. Class 55 (1). [Also in Group XIII] A synthesis gas producer which incorporates a steam boiler (see Group XIII) serving to cool the synthesis gas and to generate steam for use in the process comprises an upright, cylindrical, pressure shell 30 having external insulation 31 and closed at top and bottom by domed covers 21, 64, the shell being lined with water tubes 40 which extend from a lower header 55 to the steam and water drum 50 of the boiler. The lower part of the shell contains the gasefication reaction furnace 45, the tubes 40 in this region being covered with layers 41, 42, 43 of refractory material. Gas burners spaced around the furnace are used to bring it to the working temperature whereupon pulverized carbonaceous fuel, normally coal, steam and commercially pure oxygen or air in an amount insufficient to support complete combustion are injected into the furnace through burners 70. Molten slag collects on the furnace floor 57 and discharges through an outlet 49. Hot reaction gases are cooled in the upper part of the shell by the bare water tubes 40 and flow from the shell through a transverse gas pass 75 locating further cooling surfaces constituted by a superheater 90 and tubes banks 87 of the boiler convection section and leading into an outlet conduit 100 containing an economizer 80. The reactants leaving the economizer 80 are cooled to stabilizing temperature and are then processed as desired.
