Abstract
Alkali metal silicates are formed by mixing a material containing silica, an alkali metal carbonate and a liquid alkali metal hydroxide and reacting the mixture in a furnace to form said silicate. The invention is described with reference to sodium silicates bu each alkali metal is mentioned. The expression "material containing silica" includes anhydrous and hydrated silica and sodium silicates such as water glasses having a Na2:SiO2 ratio of 1:2-4, and the liquid hydroxide may be a melt of a solid hydrated or anhydrous hydroxide or an aqueous solution. Exemplified proportions of hydroxide to carbonate range from 1 to 60 per cent and concentrations of aqueous hydroxide range from 10 to 74 per cent. In one embodiment a mixture of soda ash and sand are fed into the trough of a pug mill and liquid sodium hydroxide added, e.g. as a molten stream directly from a caustic soda plant. In passing through the pug mill the mixture becomes granular and damp or dry and is discharged into a furnace maintained at e.g. 1200 DEG or 1370 DEG C. by gas or oil burners and the liquid product discharged.
