Abstract

789,140. Aerials. ALBISWERK ZURICH AKT.-GES. Aug. 27, 1956 [Oct. 28, 1955], No. 26201/56. Class 40 (7). Relates to a radar antenna which may perform either a conical scan or a plane scan. The antenna comprises a primary radiator 1 terminating a waveguide 13 and a reflector 2, the two antenna members being arranged for independent movement. To perform a conical scan, the primary radiator is moved in a circle about a first axis 12, whilst the reflector is held stationary, and to perform a linear scan, the primary radiator is held stationary whilst the reflector is oscillated about an axis (horizontal as shown) perpendicular to the first axis. The waveguide is mounted in a universal joint 14 and is coupled through a further universal joint to a disc 15 driven by a motor 16. The primary radiator may thus be moved in a circle about axis 12, and if the inflector is held stationary with its axis of symmetry coincident with axis 12, the antenna performs a conical scan. The angle α between waveguide 13 and axis 12 is 1-1.5 degrees, and the rate of rotation about this axis approximately 1800 revolutions per minute. Reflector 2 is also mounted on joint 14 (but independently of waveguide 13) so as to permit tilting movement about a horizontal axis. For this purpose, the reflector is connected at a point 18 outside the tilting axis through a drive-spring 19 with a crank wheel 20 driven through worm 22 by a motor 21. The arrangement includes springs 23, 24 which are dimensioned so that the resonant frequency of the whole of the tiltable assembly is between 3 and 5 cycles per second. The tilting angle # is approximately 10 degrees. The whole antenna assembly and drive is supported on a pedestal 4 so as to be capable of elevational adjustment about an axis 5 under the control of a motor 9 and azimuthal adjustment about an axis 7 under the control of a motor 8.
