Abstract

581,570. Directive wireless signalling. CORK, E. C., and MANIFOLD, M. BOWMANFeb. 15, 1943, No. 2509. [Class 40 (v)] An arrangement for projecting a beam of very short electrical waves comprises a substantially parabolic reflector 1 adapted to be moved in such a way that its axis generates a cone in space of which the apex is the focus of the reflector. As shown in Fig. 2, the reflector 1 is supported by a gymbal mounting 6, 9, 7 providing two transverse axes crossing at the focus of the reflector where a radiation source 2 is situated, being supplied by wave guides 3 attached by posts 11 to the outer gymbal ring 6 on a main frame 5. A bearing 17 in the axis of the reflector is engaged by a pin 14 eccentrically attached to a crank 15 on the spindle 16 of a motor 4 mounted on the frame 5. The rotation of the spindle 16 causes the axis of the reflector to generate the desired cone in space. The angle of the cone may be adjusted by adjusting the eccentricity of the pin 14. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the gymbal mounting is replaced by a pneumatic tyre giving universal freedom of movement to the reflector.
